Construction Site Theft in Colorado

Construction company owners have got to protect themselves from thieves. In the end, these thefts trickle down to us as the cost gets rolled in to make up the losses.

Sometime between the night John Carey left the Gypsum Costco construction site Aug. 8 and returned early the following morning, thieves stole and damaged $500,000 in equipment and concrete. The construction theft - some say the biggest in Eagle County history - surprised Carey, site superintendent for Robinson Construction Co. "It's the biggest one I've seen in 32 years," Carey said. "There's been a couple through the years - nothing like this. It took quite a few people to do what they did in that amount of time." Thieves stole over 100 pieces of equipment - including hand tools, power tools, generators, welders and a band saw - from the construction site.

Business Against Crime Network

San Antonio, TX has a really innovative program to help combat Business Crime. I don't know how many other cities have similar programs, but this is a good step in the right direction.

BAT-NET is a Business Crime Alert Program
Provided by the San Antonio Police Department
for Businesses in the San Antonio Area.

BAT-NET is an acronym for Businesses Against Theft Network. Originally focusing on shoplifting and internal theft problems of businesses, BAT-NET has now expanded to include all crimes that affect both large and small businesses in San Antonio. These include robbery, fraud & scams, hot checks, embezzlement, property loss, and a wide range of business-related crimes.

Copper Theft in Vermont

Copper theft doesn't look like it will let up anytime soon. See what happened in Vermont as reported by WCAX-TV 3.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. Police are looking for thieves who stole about seven thousand dollars worth of copper wire from a Portsmouth (New Hampshire) company.

The copper was stolen from BayRing Communications this week. It was the latest in a series of copper thefts in the region, as the price of copper continues to rise.

I can't see where there is possibly enough police on the street to deter a crime like this.

CCTV System Component Selection

Closed Circuit TV systems were developed in the UK in 1970s. Of course, there have been major changes and advancements since then. CCTV systems used to be very expensive, cumbersome and had to be installed by a professional due to the complexities of setting the systems up. These systems today are much more reasonably priced, they are easier to configure and they can be installed by the end user if they are only slightly electronically inclined.

The primary uses for CCTV systems are surveillance, traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, robbery deterrence, and identification. The basic system would include a camera, monitor and recording device to store the video.

Protecting Your Business from Thieves

By: Shane Franklin
8/1/06

You’ve invested your time and money in starting a business. So, why wouldn’t you want to make sure it’s protected? In some cities there are 20 or more burglaries a day. Even if your business is in a smaller city and there is only 1 per day, why would you want to chance being a victim? You say, but I have insurance. Well, with insurance there is still a lot of pain and suffering involved if you’re business is burglarized. If you’re lucky maybe you’ll only lose a day of productivity. You’ve got to file the insurance claims, go and replace the lost equipment (hopefully you‘ve got the money until your claim is paid), if it was your computers, load new software, etc., etc. There are, however, many things you can do to protect this from happening to your business. You should make sure all entries are secured well, make sure there are not obstructions to give burglars a place to hide or be unseen while getting in, make sure the area is well lit so there is a good chance of them being seen, put on burglar bars, put in an alarm system or a CCTV system, get a guard dog or even sleep there overnight. One of the best ways, however, is with a new CCTV System that is actually a security system as well. There are new CCTV Digital Video Recorders that not only record the crime for prosecution, but also actually call you during the burglary. You can then pull up the system via the Internet, verify that there is a crime in action and that it wasn’t just an animal or some other false alarm. The biggest problem with a standard security system is false alarms. With these new types of systems the alarm can be verified and the authorities can be notified and they will arrive much faster than with an unverified alarm system. If you don’t want to have to be woken in the middle of the night, you can hire a monitoring company to verify the alarm or you can have your employees take turns being on call to verify the alarm. If you take these steps, then you can feel comfortable that your business is safe.
